Introducing the Dragonguard: 4th Experimental Cavalry

16 Lamashan Pazan 4711

The kobolds of the Dragonguard, now organized into a cohesive military unit with a sprawling kingdom to defend against creatures much bigger than themselves, the ingenuitive kobolds have started implementing tactics and weapons-of-war to counter their diminutive size...

Welcome the 4th Experimental, Antler Cavalry!

Relatively common in the untamed Greenbelt of Mounted two to each elk, the animal provides a mobile platform able to negotiate the forests of the Narlmarches. In addition, their herd-mentality makes combat maneuvers easier to accomplish.

At least, that's the theory...

The kobold trainers are still having problems with aggressive males, especially during the rutting season. More than a few kobolds have been brutally injured by stomping elk and the sharp antlers of the bulls.

Mounted two to each elk, shield and lance in front, crossbow or wand behind, the unit has had some success as scouts and skirmishers especially when negotiating the thickly forested Narlmarches.

  1. Exactly right! The Kobolds have strength in numbers and in size, not to mention their ingenuity. I proclaim the future opening of a school of engineering to help out the most ingenious of the Kobolds in their art of machine building for war, the teaching of guerrilla tactic (should be good at that), and with the fighting finess taught by duelers (Clovis might find someone good enough to teach that).

  2. "Pazan 4711"
Very well done with the muy bien!

  3. "I think that the 2 kobolds should mount the elks / horses BACK TO BACK.

This way, they could shoot arrows to enemies both behind and in front of them, thus reducing the risk of being ambushed or attacked from behind.

Moreover - while galloping - they could continue shooting and aiming even when the mount dodge enemies or dangers".

  4. Back-to-back! The experimental unit evolves!

  6. This will be the 5th unit of our kingdom!

The DRAGON ORDER OF THE MOUNTED ARCHERS: deadly fast-moving units of riders, shooting arrows, peppering enemies, retreating swiftly before the retaliations.

Two koblods or small humanoids (humans/dwarfs/halflings...) - or even, say, a kobold and a halfilng - on a single horse, back-to-back, armend with bows, blowguns, throwing hammers and axes, slings...

This new style of combat could be a staple of the Six Rivers and in the records of history it will be described as the deadly Six Rivers riders unit style of mounted combat...

  7. To recap:

1 - The River Watch (elite guards)
2 - The Dragon Guard (elite guards)
3 - The Dragon Scouts (scouting unit)
4 - The Dragon Watch (night unit of guards)
5 - The Dragon Order of Mounted Archers (guerrilla warfare unit)

  8. I want no part of your kink-dom! :P

But be wary, this is the 4th unit of the Dragonguard, not a separate organization!

On top of that, the Riverwatch is a paramilitary police force. It doesn't count either!

  9. More like:
    1 - The Dragonguard
    i - 1st Kobold Infantry
ii - 2nd Dragon Scouts (the Tatzlwyrms)
    iii - 3rd Unnamed unit
iv - 4th Experimental, Antler Cavalry (pending full combat readiness)
    2 - The Riverwatch

  10. Actually,

    1 - DRAGON SCOUTS
    (scouting unit)

    2 - DRAGON WATCH
    (guards and sentries)

3 - DRAGON ORDER OF MOUNTED ARCHERS
    (guerrilla mounted warfare unit)

are just 3 different divisions of the DRAGON GUARD, specialized in specific kinds of attacks / operations / missions.

  11. Haha, cheater! You removed your kinkdom comment! Quorra's less-than-respectable nature has gained a new nickname for the Six Rivers.

  12. Hey, do not forget the DRAGON WHATCH,
which might take shifts with the River watch, at night!

  13. It was not deliberate (the kink-dom)!

  14. You are right, we'll have to settle the divisions, the units and the corps of our internal / external forces...

Quorra has to talk with the New King, Clovis the First about all these grave matters of life and death of our young kingdom!

  15. Or with the Dragon of WAR, himself, Chief Sootscale!

  16. What about this, following Zargon's suggestion:

    1 - The DRAGONGUARD
    i - 1st Kobold Infantry
ii - 2nd Dragon Scouts (the Tatzlwyrms)
iii - 3rd Dragonwatch (sentries and guards)
    iv - 4th Antler Cavalry
(experimental swift mounted guerrilla unit, pending full combat readiness)
    2 - The RIVERWATCH

  17. Both of them, Clovis and Sootscale!

  18. Sentry and guard duty are not separate from other responisbilities. There's certainly nothing saying that they're can't be kobolds in the Riverwatch, but there probably wouldn't be a whole 'nother military unit, unless it was a military police, but we've not quite the size yet.

  19. I guess you are right.

Anyway, I'd like to see the Antler Cavalry also called The Dragon Order of Mounted Archers, because I see it as the dream of young Kobolds, who say; "Daddy, one day I will be member of the Dragon Order of Mounted Archers, you will be proud of me!"

And the relation between the 2 kobolds, mounting the same elk/horse, could be the same existing between Luke Skywalker and R2-D2! Trust, mutual-help and respect, joint-deeds...

Many of these "couples" will enter the Book of History for having perfectly worked, like perfectly oiled gears! Something like:

"Listen you all, those two were the bane of the enemy, with their arrows and slings, they could bring down scores of enemies a battle! They were never toppled or killed by the enemies of the Six Rivers!"

  20. The secret? You do not know it?

Obviously their legendary swiftness in reloading their deadly ranged weapons!!!

  21. "I am keen to equip our kobold cavalry and infantry with certain alchemical inventions I have developed over the past few months of research. The ever-effective dragon-breath solution, which, when imbibed, gives the drinker the ability to let forth a great gout of flame from their mouth, would, I believe, be a devastating augmentation to the 4th Antler Cavalry's rear-facing kobold. Not only would it play to the kobolds' deeply rooted fetish for all things draconic, it would also result in an exponential increase in the units' lethality! Imagine an initial charge of Antler Cavalry, thundering past the enemy lines, then, just as the stunned enemy catch their breath, seeing the kobold riding elks galloping past, the rear-mounted kobold on each elk lets fly with a 15-foot cone of flame, engulfing the flat-footed enemies in a chaos of fiery death! Furthermore, the much simpler, and potentially less dangerous, but no more less effective application of my alchemical solution, would be to equip regiments of kobold infantry with my firebombs, essentially creating squadrons of grenadiers."

    Fire breathing kobolds!

  23. Guys have a look at this extract from Paizo, about Kobolds:

"...kobolds sometimes hatch out a throwback to their draconic ancestors. These are the dragonbreath kobolds, who share the ability of the chromatic dragons to breathe acid, cold, electricity, fire, or poisonous gas. They can breathe in 15-foot lines or 10-foot cones once per round as a move action, forcing a DC 13 Reflex save for half damage. Those who fail the saving throw take 1d8 points of damage. After using their breath weapons, dragonbreath kobolds must wait 1d4 rounds before using them again..."

We just have to recruit some gifted ones for the Antler Cavalry / Dragon Order of Mounted Archers! (in addition to the precious Orric's achemical bombs).
